ABOUT

Hi, I'm Cameron Sperling. I graduated with Great Distinction from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Music, majoring in Digital Audio Arts and minoring in Japanese. My area of interest is in sound design, particularly for video games. I'm experienced in the use of various digital audio workstations (DAWs), sound recording, editing, and mixing techniques, musical theory and compositional skills. Between my university studies and real world experience I have done sound design, foley, and music composition for video game development, video production, and stage plays.

Experience

Video Game Production (University Course)

I took this course as a general elective in my 5th year of university so that I could apply the skills that I had acquired and learn more about the game development process. During this course I was part of a three-man sound team, and assisted in the training of a junior team member. My responsibilities included the creation of sound effects, from recording samples, to editing, mixing, and processing them into their final product, as well as working with the programming team to implement the audio assets into Unreal Engine. I was also a sound engineer, assistant voice director, and additional voice actor for the dialogue recording sessions.

Foley and Sound Design for Film (Independent Research Course)

I developed and took this course in my 5th year of university as a way of extending my experience beyond just music related projects. For the course assignments I selected three film scenes from different genres that had a musical soundtrack, but no additional sounds. I then developed my own sound effects for the scenes, documented my work process, and gave a presentation to my peers about what I did, what issues I encountered, and what I learned from it.

Audio Engineering Society - Lethbridge Student Chapter

During my first year in university I joined the Lethbridge Student Chapter of the AES. From the fall semester of 2017 until fall 2019, and for the year of 2022, I was a volunteer member of the chapter. During this time I attended regularly scheduled meetings, and helped with planning and setting up fundraiser events such as the AES fest live concert. I was also able to participate in workshops, field trips, and other student activities such as mixing contests. From the start of 2020 until the end of the spring semester in 2021, I was elected to the executive team, and served as the secretary. My responsibilities included attending additional meetings for the executive team to organize workshops and activities, taking meeting notes for both executive and general meetings, and assisting the President and Vice-President with any additional duties that needed doing.

Cranbrook Community Theatre (Sound Designer)

During the summer of 2021, I was asked to create the sound cues for the community theatre production “The Shape of a Girl”. Since then, I have been invited back to create the sound cues for multiple productions including Tuesdays with Morrie, The Shoplifters, and A Christmas Carol. During all of these productions, the directors would give me a list of sound cues from the script, and my job was to create a sound effect or soundscape for those cues and pass it along to the sound and lighting technicians to use during the performance.
